Why Eye Exercises Improve Eyesight

Improve Eyesight with Eye Exercises

Eye exercises improve eyesight by relaxing the external muscles of the eye.

There are six external muscles attached to the eye. Four of these muscles extend back from the eye and are intended to rotate the eye up and down, and right and left. Two of the muscles go partially around the eye. Dr. Bates indicated that these two muscles that partially go around the eye are responsible for accommodation (allowing the eye to see close objects clearly).

When the external muscles are at rest or relaxed the eye is nearly spherical. This is the proper shape for seeing objects at a distance. To see near objects the two muscles going around the eye contract and cause the eye to elongate. Near objects then focus clearly on the retina.

According to the Bates theory, chronic tension in the external muscles cause the eye to deviate from its normal spherical shape. Chronic tension in the muscles extending back from the eye will pull it into the eye socket pressing on the back side of the eye and producing farsightedness. Chronic tension in the muscles that go partially around the eye squeeze the eye to become too long and produce nearsightedness. Tenseness in these muscles can also cause astigmatism.

Thus, to improve eyesight and see more clearly, you must release the chronic tension in these muscles and allow the eye to regain its normal spherical shape.

Eye exercises such as the long swing, palming, and sunning help relax these muscles and improve eyesight.

As you practice these eye exercises you will begin relax your eye muscles. At first you will improve your eyesight only immediately after the exercise. After a few days or weeks, your eyesight will improve for a considerable time after you have completed the exercises.

The more you practice eye exercises, the easier it will be to relax your eye muscles. Not only will you improve your eyesight, but you will likely have fewer headaches and will feel generally better.

I suggest you read Relearning to See as an up-to-date reference about the Bates method. This book explains how the eye works and gives an excellent explanation of the Bates method that will improve your eyesight.

When fighting, boxing and grappling, where do you focus your vision mostly ?

When I train with people I tend to keep my vision more focus on the center of the clavicle area of a person ,so i can see all of the person's limbs at one time that I'm training with. I'm new to training full contact( all out ). I have only been training in juijitsu and mma for approximately 3-4 months. If you have an idea what I am talking about please give your opinion and suggestions.

Critter,

The more you see, the less you see. Use your eyes up to the point that contacat has been made. That is, if you're squared off into the outer cirle - (kicking distance) - use your eyes. If you've come into the middle circle - (mid-range techniques like punching) - use you eyes and consider awareness of intent in the oponent. Once you've established contact, that is you've touched, grabbed and the energy is turned on - use the force Luke!! Ha! Be aware of his strong and weak sides as well as your own. You should be doing drills with your Sensei or Sifu that include slow-motion grappling, closing the gap to grappling - and a real good one - "red light - green light!" Once you've gotten the upper hand, your oponent yells out "red light" before things go too far and he's totally lost control. At that point, you freeze frame and give him the opportunity to think what he should do at that moment. When he's ready he'll say - "green light" - and then you - and then - - - bla bla bla. Practice - practice - practice. I teach traditional Kung Fu and Tai Chi. In both, the slo-mo is great as is red light green light.

peace and strength 'bro

What are the basic eye exercise that can improve your vision?

I heard there were a certain “eye exercise” that can help improve your vision. If so, what are they?

Okay here you go. “Sit and relax. Roll your eyes clockwise, then counter-clockwise. Repeat 5 times, and blink in between each time.”

How to naturally improve eyesight?

Yes this is a commonly asked question, but I'm just seeing the answers for today rather than look at past/old answers. People say to eat carrots, green vegetables, etc, but it doesn't seem to help much/at all. Is it actually possible to improve eyesight naturally or through exercises?

http://www.instructables.com/id/How-to-improve-eyesight_1/

The website has 6 easy instructions to natrually improve eyesight. The steps are difficult to explain, but the website providese pictures to show what to do.

does anybody know why people get a lazy eye? are there any exercises one can do to help it go away?

i've noticed that my right eye seems to be a little lazy. mainly in pictures. for the most part both my eyes stay open and are alert but every now and then i feel that it starts to become lazy and have noticed it in pictures. are there any eye exercises or something to help the lazy eye go away.

Do you mean that when you see a photo of yourself say with family or a group of friends your right eye seems closed more than your left eye? Lazy eye has to do with the actual eye, not the eye lids. Lazy eye is due to the muscles around the eyeball that control the eyeball movements, so if when you look to the right, one eye ball goes all the way to the right while the other eyeball is looking straight ahead, you have lazy eye. Good Luck

Bates Method - any successes out there? Share stories please.?

I'm living proof that it does work. Used to have 4/20 'average' binocular eyesight (both eyes simulateously) and after only a month, increased the 'average' to 10/20. I used to have 'clear flashes' at lower quality (15/20-20/20) and two days ago I started having clear flashes that were 20/13 and better. Confirmed on a Snellen eye chart for everything, tested on a regular basis under similar conditions. Those charts do not lie.

My clear flash two days ago appears to have gone beyond 20/10 because I could see the strands of hair on kids' hair about 1/4 to 1/5 mile from where I was standing. I could also see details in a jet stream in the sky about 30-50 miles away.

Vision is largely a MENTAL process. In fact, only one person to my knowledge has ever done intensive studies on how to modify vision through the eye of the mind itself. That person is the man behind the Bates method. If any of you have questions, I can add details to answer them. Come on, give me your best shot.
Dorris- two reasons it hasn't gained acceptance in the medical community is due to limited interest and incorrect/limited research procedures (and this includes even double blind randomized, controlled trials, which is our 'gold standard'). Citation: http://www.rccm.org.uk/static/Report_COST_constraints.aspx

Also, science is prone to "swings" of groupthink…and this can lead to a trend of misinformation in the public, so it's an individual's job to decide what is acceptable–by trying something and not being too dependent on a group's way of thinking.

Neuroplasticity is a new, recently emerged field of neuroscience. It reveals how imprints remain in the mind long after drills are done. It is so new that it has not gained mainstream acceptance yet.
"The main thing to know is that even the adult brain is not "hard-wired" with fixed and immutable neuronal circuits. Many people have been taught to believe that once a brain injury occurs, there is little to do to repair the damage. This is simply not the case and there is no fixed period of time after which "plasticity" is blocked or lost."

Article from a renowned science magazine called Discover regarding neuroplasticity: http://www.outlook-insight.com/forum1/viewtopic.php?t=314
Thanks for the link, dorris.

Good for you if it worked but so far Bates is not accepted in the medical community. Their claim is not back by solid scientific evidence. You may take a look at NEUROVISION (www.neuro-vision.com).Research has been done (and some still ongoing) regarding their premise of– training the brain to see better. However, it is only available in selected countries.
